ROGERTS`  64 – PAGE DOSSIER

There are too many uncertainties in this pedigree for it to be an entirely satisfactory one.

The missing baptism of John Morter (circa 1794-1796) comes to mind as an example.

Nevertheless, it will form a basis for future research should a member of the family

be inclined to undertake the task.

                                                                                                                                                           Norwich. February 1988.

I wrote the above as a preface to the research into the Morter family which

I did for Margaret Morter of Wymondham. It still holds good today. In short,

the pedigree laid out in the interpretation I can make with the information

available to me. Perhaps new information will come to light, which will show

my interpretation to be a wrong or an inaccurate one. This I would welcome,

for I am far too well aware of the pitfalls which exist in this type of research

and wise enough to admit that I could be wrong.

MORTER FAMILY

1.PHILIP MORTER.

Philip Morter was of Morningthorpe, Norfolk in 1698. His age at that time

and his place of birth I have not discovered.

This entry is in the Morningthorpe Parish Register: -

"Philip Morter and Catherine Harris, Widow, were married ye 20th of

 September 1698."

Unless Philip was much younger or older than his bride, it may be possible

to deduce roughly, his age at this time.

This entry is from Morningthorpe register: -

Thomas Harris, a base son of Catherine Lincolne (as she is commonly

is called) and Thomas Harris, was baptised on ye 25th day of February Ano.

Dom. 1682/3.

If Catherine was aged between 16 years and say 20 years at the time

of this baptism, she would have been born circa 1662-1666. Therefore if Philip

was her equal in age, or maybe a year or two older he could have been born

circa 1660-1665, which means that he was possibly between 33 and 38 years old

when he married Catherine. As he is not called a widower in the

marriage entry, the presumption is that this was his first marriage.

The name Morter appears frequently in Parish registers in that segment of

Norfolk bounded by Cromer in the north, Norwich in the south and Gt.

Yarmouth in the east, with North Walsham as a focal point. The North

Walsham registers contain numerous "Morter" entries.

A Thomas Morter was buried at North Walsham on 21st December 1636. The

Names of his children baptised there were: -

Thomas, baptised 7th September 1600.

William baptised 17th February 1604.

Maria baptised 4th June 1609.

John baptised 22nd March 1611.

Robert baptised 9th July 1615.

Richard baptised 9th November 1621.

Of these, Thomas, William, John and Robert had children baptised at North

Walsham.

Thomas the eldest son, by his wife Frances had the following children

baptised there: -

Thomas baptised 11th May 1627.

Philip baptised 31st July 1630. (Fillipus)

Margaret baptised 30th January 1633.

Robert baptised 7th April 1635.

-2-

Of these, it is a possibility that both Thomas and Philip were later to

 be found at Happisburgh.

The Happisburgh register records the baptisms of the following children of

a Thomas Morter and Jane his wife: -

Bridget 1661, Thomas 1663, Anne 1671, and Mary 1673. The burial of

James 1669, and the baptisms of John 1676, Francis 1678, and Elizabeth 1680.

These last three were the children of a Thomas and his wife Mary, which may

have been a second marriage.

A Philip Morter and his wife Dorothy had but two children baptised at Happisburgh. These were: -

Rose born 31st October 1654 and John, born 1st April 1656.

Philip Morter appears to have removed from Happisburgh, as I have found no

more trace of him.

The age of Philip Morter of Morningthorpe, as previously roughly computed,

suggests that he was of an age to have been a son of Philip Morter of

Happisburgh but I have found not a shred of evidence to support this.

Catherine Lincolne must have married her first husband Thomas Harris,

between 25th February 1683, and the baptismal date of her illegitimate son

Thomas and 23rd November 1684, the date of baptism of her second child, as

this entry in the Morningthorpe register shows: -

"Elizabeth, ye daughter of Thomas Harris and Catherine his wife was

baptised ye 23rd day of November A.D 1684."

Thomas and Catherine had two more sons baptised at Morningthorpe, they

were: -

John Harris baptised between 20th May and 24th May 1688. (strangely the

date has been omitted but the entry is between two entries of the dates

shown).

William Harris, baptised 30th January 1689/90.

Thomas Harris, the father was buried at Morningthorpe on 9th November

1692.

As has been shown, his widow Catherine married Philip Morter on 20th

September 1698.

In 1703, Philip and Catherine were living in Long Stratton. The following

document records that Philip bought property there: -

-3 -

Stratton St. Mary.

Indenture, Mortgage and Release.

 1.  Ralph Lord, of Hardwick, husbandman, son and heir of John Lord, late of

Stratton St. Mary, alias Long Stratton, husbandman, deceased.

 2.  Philip Morter of Stratton St. Mary, husbandman.

Messuage in Stratton St. Mary. 31st July 1703. (Ms.14565 36c6.)

Catherine, wife of Philip Morter, was buried at Stratton St. Mary on 15th

February 1710. She must have been at least 44 years old, assuming her age

to have been 16 years when she had her first child Thomas Harris baptised.

Children of Philip and Catherine Morter, the first two baptised at Morningthorpe: -

2. Philip.

3. William.

4. George.

5. Catherine.

Philip Morter married again but I have not found out where or when. His new

wife was named Mary.

He was buried at Stratton St. Mary on 2nd January 1721/2.

His will was dated 21st October 1721 and it was proved by the executrix on

27th December 1721. (Norfolk Archdeacon's Court) Unless there is a mistake

it appears that the will was proved before his burial.

The will reads:-

In the name of God, Amen. I, Philip Morter of Stratton St. Mary in the

County of Norfolk, Husbandman, being sick of body but of sound and perfect

memory, thanks be to God, do make and ordain this my last will and

"testament in manner following, Vizt.

Imprimis. I devise all my just debts may be paid by my executrix herein

after named. Item. I give to Mary my loving wife and to her heirs and

assigns all and singular my personal estate, goods, chattels and household

stuff whatsoever in or about my now dwelling house in Stratton St. Mary or

elsewhere, in whose hands custody or possession forever they may or shall

be found, paying out thereof unto Philip, William and George my sons, one

shilling a piece, within one month after my decease, if demanded.

Item. I give and bequeath unto Mary my loving wife, aforesaid, who has been

kind to me in my affliction, the messuage or tenement, lands and premises

in Stratton St. Mary aforesaid, wherein I now dwell, for and during the term

of her natural life and after her decease, I give the same unto Philip

Morter, my son and to his heirs and assigns forever. Upon this condition,

that he the said Philip Morter my son, shall not molest, disturb or disquiet

the said Mary my wife in her quiet and peaceable possession and enjoyment

thereof, nor cause the same to be done during the term of her natural life

thereof. If he so do cause the same to be done, tis my mind and will and I

do absolutely and without any condition whatsoever give and bequeath the

said messuage or tenement, lands and premises, (being freehold) unto the

said Mary my wife and to her heirs and assigns forever.

Lastly, I nominate and appoint the said Mary my wife to be executrix of

this my last will and testament.

- 4 -

In witness whereof to this my last will and testament contained in half a sheet

of paper, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 21st day of

October in the year of our Lord 1721.

The mark of Philip Morter.

Sealed subscribed and declared this to be the last will and testament of

the said Philip Morter, the testator. In the presence of Walter Durban.

Henry Fostick Durban.

Proved by executrix 27th December 1721.

Evidently, the son Philip Morter released to his stepmother, his right in

the property 'in Stratton St. Mary which his father had left. This document

is in the Norfolk Record Office: -

Stratton St. Mary.

Indenture release.

1.     Philip Morter of Hethersett, husbandman.

2.     Mary Morter of Stratton St. Mary, Widow.

Messuage with premises and land in Stratton St. Mary. 14th November 1723.

Seal affixed. (Xs. 14569 36c6.)

The same year, Mary mortgaged the property: -

Stratton St. Mary.

Indenture, Mortgage by Lease and Release.

1. Mary Morter of Stratton St. Mary, Widow.

2. John Howes of Morningthorpe, Esq.,

Messuage, yard, orchard and land in Stratton, 27 and 28 November 1723

.2 Seals affixed. (Ms. 14570 3606.)

The widow, Mary Morter married again at Stratton St. Mary. The entry in the

Parish register reads: -

"John Ebbets of Shelton, Widower and Mary Morter of this Parish, Widow were

married December 29th 1727."

John Ebbets and his wife Mary took an additional mortgage on the Long

Stratton property as this deed shows:-

Stratton St. Michael. '

John Ebbets of Stratton St. Mary, Mason and Mary his wife, late Mary

Morter, Widow; to John Howes of Morningthorpe, Esq.

Messuage, yard, orchard and land in' Stratton. 19th December 1728.

'2 seals affixed. (Ms. 14572. 36c6.)

2. PHILIP MORTER.

Son of Philip and Catherine (Lincolne. Harris.) Morter he was baptised at

Morningthorpe on 15th April 1699. Mentioned in his father's will, 1721.

(Apprenticed for 7 years, to Thomas Harris of Tasburgh, cordwainer, "son of

Philip Morter of Stratton, Norfolk." [Information supplied by Christine

Morter of Felmingham).

That this Philip moved to Hethersett is proved by the Indenture Release

(Ms. 14569.36c6.) already shown. Furthermore, when he and his second wife

Elizabeth baptised their son William at Hethersett, the parson recorded that

- 5 -

They had been married at Long Stratton, (perhaps he had his doubts). In

fact, no such marriage can be found at either of the Stratton parishes.

Philip married, (1.) at Hethersett on 5th January 1717/8 Elizabeth

Fidderman. The entry reads: -

"Phill. Morter and Elizabeth Fidderman were married the 5th day of January

1717."

Child of Philip Morter and his first wife Elizabeth (Fidderman,): -

6. Rose.

Elizabeth the wife of Philip Morter was buried at Hethersett on 27th

November 1720.

Philip married (2,) at Hethersett, Elizabeth Kay. The entry in the register

Reads: -

Philip Morter, Widower, and Elizabeth May, Singlewoman were married by

banns, Jan. 5th 1725. (1725/6.)

Elizabeth was buried at Hethersett on 6th December 1761. Philip was buried

there on 30th June 1769. (1764. Christine Morter of Felmingham.)

Children of Philip Morter and his second wife Elizabeth (May.): -

7. William

8. Elizabeth

9. Susanna

10.Thomas.

11.Elizabeth.

3.WILLIAM MORTER.

Son of Philip and Catherine (Lincolne. Harris.) Morter he was baptised at

Morningthorpe on 20th November 1700. Mentioned in his father's will, 1721.

While it is evident that his brother Philip moved to Hethersett and was

living there in 1717, it' seems that William did not settle there until 1735.

From a catalogue of the papers in the Parish Chest at Hethersett taken in

1784, it appears that there was then in existence a settlement certificate

for William Morter, dated 1735. Had this certificate still been in existence

it, would no doubt have told us from whence he had come and the names of

his family at that time. There is no marriage entry for William at

Hethersett, thus the-presumption is that he was already married when he

came there and possibly already at that time had some children.

Proof is lacking that the William who settled at Hethersett in 1735 was the

brother of Philip; equally there is nothing to show that he was not.

William's wife was named Sarah. She was buried at Hethersett on 13th

February 1762. William Morter was buried there on 7th April 1765.

Children of William and Sarah Morter (presumed and otherwise.): -

- 6 -

12. William.

13. John.

14. Mary.

15. Susan.

16. Robert.

17. Susanna.

4       GEORGE MORTER.

Son of Philip and Catherine (Lincolne. Harris,) Morter he was baptised at

Long Stratton on 5th November 1706. Mentioned in his father's will 1'721. No

further information.

5. CATHERINE MORTER.

Daughter of Philip and Catherine (Lincolne. Harris.) Morter she was buried

at Long Stratton on 28th March 1710.

6. ROSE  MORTER.

Daughter of Philip Morter and his first wife Elizabeth (Fidderman) she was

baptised at Hethersett on 28th February 1'718. No further information.

[Rose seems to have been a name favoured by the Morter family. A Rose

Morter was buried at North Walsham on 23rd March 1639. She may have been

Rose the daughter of William and Amy Morter of North Walsham who was

baptised there on 15th July 1638, but she was not described as an infant at

her burial. Philip Morter of Happisburgh had a daughter Rose, born 31st

October 1654 who would have been the sister of Philip of Morningthorpe if

the relationship between the two Philips could be proven. Thomas, son of

Philip Morter of Hethersett also had a daughter named Rose.]

7. WILLIAM: MORTER.

Son of Philip Morter of Hethersett and his second wife, Elizabeth (May.), he

was baptised at Hethersett. The entry in the register reads: -

."William the son of Philip and Elizabeth Morter (who were married in Long

Stratton) was baptised March 26th day 1724" (or 1729).

The last figure of the year is very unclear and could be a four or a nine.

The order of the entry in the register suggests that it is a four. Philip

and Elizabeth were married at Hethersett on 5th January 1725 and so it

would seem that they misinformed the Vicar so that their child would not be

entered as "Base." There is no marriage entry in the registers of either

parish at Long Stratton. If the baptismal date was 1'729, there would have

been no need for Philip and Elizabeth to say they had married at Long

Stratton. Nevertheless, William's age at his burial was given as 62 years

which supports the 1729 date. The fact that Long, Stratton was mentioned at

all was a valuable clue as to where the family had come from.

William married at Hethersett on 9th October 1'756, Elizabeth, daughter of

Richard and Elizabeth Roberts, who had been baptised at Hethersett on 3rd

February 1734,. The entry in the register reads:-

- 7 -

No.11."William Morter of this Parish, Singleman and Elizabeth Roberts of

this Parish, Singlewoman, married in this church by banns this 9th day of

October 1756, by me John Berney, Rector. Both made mark.

In the presence of John Jary, Thomas Dunn, his mark.

(Note. There is no confirmatory proof that Elizabeth was daughter of

Richard and Elizabeth Roberts. She does, however, seem to be the only one

of an age to fit the bill.)

Elizabeth was buried at Ketteringham on 27th September 1781. William was

buried there on 11th March 1790, his age being given as 62 years.

Children of William and Elizabeth (Roberts.) Hethersett

and Ketteringham:-

18. William.

19. John.

20. Elizabeth.

21. Robert.

22. Mary.

23. Hannah.

24. James.

8. ELIZABETH MORTER

Daughter of Philip and Elizabeth (May.) of Hethersett she was buried

there on 28th March 1727,

9. SUSANNA MORTER

Daughter of Philip and Elizabeth (May.) Morter of Hethersett, she was

baptised there on 29th September 1729 and buried on 8th October of the

same year.

10. THOMAS MORTER. . ..

Son of Philip and Elizabeth (May.) Morter of Hethersett he was baptised

there on 22nd March 1730.

[Apprenticed to William Joel of Hethersett, Tailor. Information from

Christine Morter of Felmingham.)

His wife was named Margaret, but I have not found the date or place of

marriage.

Thomas was buried at Hethersett on 13th January 1780/1, Margaret does not

seem to have been buried there. Unless she re-married, she may have been

the Widow Morter mentioned in the Hethersett Poor Law Accounts (Ms. 9

7136A L3731 and Pd 41 32-35.) Widow Morter was in receipt of regular

quarterly payments of £2, which she was paid at Hethersett until a payment

of 16th September 1810 stated that she was then of Finsbury, London. The

payment of 12th March 1814 was made to her at Sittingbourne, Kent and from

that time until 23rd April 1816 when "a letter was received from Mrs.

Morter's friends informing them at Hethersett of her decease." she was in

regular receipt of her money paid to her in Kent by mail.

If she was Thomas's widow she must have been about 80 years old when she

died.

Children of Thomas and Margaret Morter: -

25. William.

26. Elizabeth.

27. Susanna.

28. Philip.

29. Sarah.

30. Rose.

31. James.

32. Rebeckah.

33. Ann.

34. John.

35. Edmund.

11. ELIZABETH MORTER.

Daughter of Philip and Elizabeth (May.) Morter of Hethersett, she was

baptised there on 28th April 1734 and probably buried thereon 1st October

following.

12. WILLIAM MORTER.

Probable son of William and Sarah Morter he was born circa 1734, that is

before his parents (if such they be) settled at Hethersett. I have not found

his baptism at Morningthorpe or at Long Stratton. Married at Hethersett on

13th October 1766, Hannah Cooper. The entry in the register reads:-

"William Morter of this Parish, Singleman and Hannah Cooper of this Parish,

Singlewoman, were married in this Church by banns this.13th day of October

1766, by me John Berney, Rector. Both made their mark.

In the presence of John Jary, John Morter his mark."

It may be this William Morter referred to on occasions in the Overseers of

the Poor at Hethersett account books as "Old William Morter" He received

small sums from time to time, usually when he was ill. This entry is

contained in these records:-

"2nd May 1810, William Morter to bury his wife £1.0.0.

“Hannah Morter was buried at Hethersett, the entry in the register reads:-

"Hannah, wife of William Morter, (late Cooper.) May 3 1810."

William was buried there on 10th June 1823 aged 89 years

-Children of William and Hannah (Cooper.) Morter:-

37. James.

- 9 -

13. JOHN MORTER.

A possible son of William and Sarah Morter. If so he was probably baptised

before his parents settled at Hethersett. A John Morter was a witness at

the wedding of William Morter and Hannah Cooper, the presumption being that

he was a brother. (see 12. William Morter.)

14. MARY MORTER.

Daughter of William and Sarah Morter she was baptised at Hethersett on

29th November 1737. No further information. Was she buried at Hethersett on

16th June 1781?

15. SUSAN MORTER.

Daughter of William and Sarah Morter she was baptised at Hethersett on

29th November 1741. Probably buried there as Susanna on 13th February

1742.

 16. ROBERT MORTER.

Son of William and Sarah Morter he was baptised at Hethersett on 29th January

1743. Buried there on 28th February following.

17. SUSANNA MORTER.

Daughter of William and Sarah Morter she was baptised at Hethersett on 1st

September 1745.

18. WILLIAM MORTER.

Son of William and Elizabeth (Roberts.) Morter he was baptised at

Hethersett. The entry in 'the register reads:-

1758. William son of William and Elizabeth Morter baptised September 24th."

Married at Little Melton the entry reads:-

“No.12. William Morter, Bowthorpe and Elizabeth Balls by License, 17th October 1790, by me John Deacon, Curate.  Both made mark.  Witnesses:

James Balls and Robert Pettitt".

William was buried at Costessey on 21st September 1834 aged 74 years.

His widow, Elizabeth was living with her daughter and son-in-law at Weston

Longville in 1841 as this extract from the census of that year shows:-

William Wood Head.  40  Agric. Lab. Born same place or county.

Elizabeth Wife.          40                      Ditto

Thomas'                    15                      Ditto

Elizabeth                    6                       Ditto

Eliza Morter               80                      Ditto

Elizabeth Morter was buried at Costessey on 31st October 1841 aged 84

years. The entry in the register notes that she had been brought from

Weston for burial. (Note the discrepancy in her age may be explained by the

Census enumerator rounding it off,)

- 10 -

Children of William and Elizabeth (Ball.) Morter born and baptised at

Costessey and Bawburgh:-

38. James.

39. Mary

40. Elizabeth

41. John,

19. JOHN MORTER.

Son of William and Elizabeth (Roberts.) Morter he was baptised at

20. ELIZABETH MORTER.

Daughter of William and Elizabeth (Roberts.) Morter she was baptised at

Hethersett. The entry in the register reads:-

"1764. Elizabeth, daughter of William and Elizabeth Morter baptised January

21st."

21. ROBERT :MORTER.

Son of William and Elizabeth (Roberts.) Morter he was baptised at

Hethersett. The entry in the register reads:-

"1766. Robert son of William and Elizabeth Morter was baptised September

29th."

Robert married at Costessey in 1828. The entry in the register reads:-

"103. Robert Morter, Singleman and Honor Woodrow, Widow, of this Parish

were married in this church by banns this 14th day of January 1828, by me

Thomas Watson.

Robert Morter, his mark.

Honor Woodrow.

In the presence of James Wrampling and Elizabeth Frost."

Robert Morter was buried at Costessey on 12th March 1841 aged 75 years.

His widow, Honour Morter is mentioned in the 1841 Census of Costessey her

age being given as 60 years. She was staying with the family of Robert

Buxton, Agricultural Labourer.

In the 1851 Census she is still called Widow and is described as

Charwoman. Her age is given as 71 years and her place of birth as Rockland.

She had living with her an unmarried son, Richard Woodrow, aged 40 years, a

bricklayer's Labourer, whose birthplace is given as Sharrington.

Honour was buried at Costessey on 7th September 1855 aged 75 years. There

appears to have been no children of her marriage to Robert Morter.

- 11 -

22. HANNAH MORTER.

Daughter of William and Elizabeth (Roberts.) Morter she was baptised at

Hethersett. The entry in the register reads:-

"1769. Hannah daughter of William and Elizabeth Morter baptised November

21st."

23.MARY MORTER.

Daughter of William and Elizabeth (Roberts.) Morter she was baptised at

Hethersett. The entry in the register reads:-

"1772. Mary daughter of William and Elizabeth Mortar baptised April 8th."

It is speculation that Mary had the following children baptised at

Hethersett and Bawburgh:-

42. James.

43. Maria.

44. Sarah

.

24. JAMES MORTER.

Son of William and Elizabeth (Roberts.) Morter he was baptised at

Ketteringham. The entry in the register reads:-

"James of William and Elizabeth Morter January 12th 1777."

James married at Bawburgh, the entry in the register reads:-

"99. James :Morter of this Parish, Singleman and Elizabeth Bennett of the

same, 'Singlewoman were married in this church by banns the, 10th day of

December 1804, by me Mich. Browne.

The mark of James Morter.

The mark of Elizabeth Bennett.

In the presence of: The mark of Samuel Shickell.

                                    The mark of Ann Shickell.”

Elizabeth was probably daughter of John and Jemima Bennett and was

baptised at Bawburgh on 25th December 1779. [Her father married the widow

of 28. Philip Morter]

Both are mentioned in the 1841 Census of Bawburgh:-

Church Street.

James Morter.                             50. Agric Lab.                                 Born same place or

                                             County.

Elizabeth.                         50                                                       Ditto

William.                             15                                                       Ditto

Elizabeth Morter was buried at Bawburgh on 15th February 1842. Her age was

given as 67 years

- 12 -

The 1851 Census records that James and his son William were lodging with

Edward Lovert and his wife Mary at Bawburgh. Part of the entry reads:-

James Morter, Lodger. Widower. 76. Agric Lab. Born Ketteringham,

William"  "                       Unm.    24.              "  Melton.

James Morter was buried at Bawburgh on 25th December 1854. His age

was given as 78 years.

Children of James and Elizabeth (Bennett.) Morter, presumed and otherwise:-

45. Robert.

45a.Hannah

46. James.

47. John.

48. Maria.

49. William.

50. Sarah.

51. Mary.

25. WILLIAM MORTER

Son of Thomas and Margaret Morter he was baptised at Hethersett. The entry

in the register reads:-

"Wm. son of Thomas and Margaret Morter was baptised April (15th?) 1755."

He married Mary Rivet, but I have not found when or where (Married 6th

December 1779 at Great Melton. Information from; Christine Morter of

Felmingham, who also says William was son of William and Elizabeth

(Roberts.) Morter.)

It was possibly this William referred to in the Overseers of the Poor

accounts as, William Morter, Senior, or, on other occasions as William

Morter, Mason., He was in. receipt of small sums of money when he was ill or

without work.

Mary Morter was buried at Hethersett on 2nd May 1839 aged 84 years.

William was buried there on 4th.June 1840 aged 86 years.

Children of William and Mary (Rivet). Morter: -

52. Elizabeth.

53. John.

54. William.

55. Sarah.

56. Francis.

57. Francis.

58. Charles.

59. Robert.

26. ELIZABETH MORTER.

Daughter of Thomas and Margaret Morter she was baptized at Hethersett on

16th October 1756.

- 13 -

27. SUSANNA MORTER

Daughter of Thomas and Margaret Morter. she was Hethersett on

27th February 1759.

Possibly the mother of Mary, baptised at Hethersett, the entry reads:-

1781. Mary daughter of Susan Morter, baptised June 1st."

It may be this Susanna Morter who married at Hethersett on 17th,May 1784,

To William Sayer of Surlingham , Widower. The following child was baptised at

Hethersett:-

"Elizabeth, daughter of William and Susanna Sayer, late Morter, March

 23rd 1785,"

28. PHILLP MORTER

Son of Thomas and Margaret Morter he was baptised at Hethersett on 24th

January 1762.

Probably married at St, Andrews Church, Norwich on 12th October 1789 Mary

Howlett,

Child of Philip and Nary Morter, baptised at Bawburgh:-

 60. Hannah.

It seems likely that Philip died before 1801 and that it was his widow,

Mary who married at Bawburgh. The entry in the register reads:-

"1801.John Bennett of, this Parish, Widower and Mary Morter of the same,

Widow, married in this church by, banns the 17th day of January" 1801, by me

Jn. Colman.

This marriage was solemnized between us: The mark of John Bennett.

                                                                      The mark of Mary Morter.

In the presence of Elizabeth Duffield. D. Brett.

(It is a possibility that Mary had two illegitimate daughters before this

marriage, Maria and Sarah, See speculation under 43. Maria Morter.]

John Bennett's wife, Jemima, had been buried at Bawburgh on 3rd February,

1790. They had had several children baptised at Bawburgh, namely:-

Elizabeth baptised 25th December 1779.

Jemima  baptised 22nd April 1781.

Ann,       baptised 2nd February 1783.

John       baptised 20th June 1784.

William   baptised 3rd December 1785.

Henry     baptised 8th August 1788.

Of these Elizabeth Bennett married James Morter of Bawburgh, see 24. James

Morter.

- 14 -

John and Mary Bennett had the following children baptised at Bawburgh: -

James, baptised 12th July 1801, buried Bawburgh 10th January 1802.

Mary Ann, bapt1sed 10th October 1804.

James, son of John and Mary Bennett, late  Morter baptised 18th March

1804/5.

This last named James Bennett is probably the one who married at Bawburgh.

The entry reads :-

“James' Bennett, Singleman' of this Parish and Martha Palmer, Singlewoman of

this Parish, were married in this church by banns this 29th day of August

1822, by me George Taylor, Curate.

This marriage was solemnized between us. James Bennett, his mark.

                                                                                Martha Palmer. her mark

In the presence of Maria Morter, Robert Matthew.

[Note. The "Maria" of :Maria Morter's signature is identical with the "Maria"

of Maria Graveley. formerly Morter, see No. 43.

Mary Bennett was buried at Bawburgh on 7th April 1825, aged 61 years.

John Bennett was buried at Bawburgh on 4th April 1830 aged 75 years.

29. SARAH MORTER

Daughter of Thomas Morter she was baptised at Hethersett on

28th January 1765.

She was a regular recipient of poor relief and is mentioned many times in

the Overseers' account books from 1806, the earliest existing book until her

death in 1821.

Her regular payment was one shilling a week, but on occasions she would

receive an extra sixpence for her "being", probably her well 'being. On other

occasions she would receive money' for clothing and other necessities, as

               for example:-

31st December 1818, a shift. 3/9d.

20th September 1818,2 pairs sheets. 5/-

14th June 1818, an apron. 2/6d.

7th October 1820, 21/2 yards of calico; 2/1d.

3rd April 1819, pair new shoes. 5/3d.

For a time in 1810 payments were made to her at Hingham.

Sometimes she would "do" for other people and be paid by the overseers, for

example:-

15th September 1815, Sarah Morter for "doing" for her sister-in-law, 2/6.

21st April for "doing for Girdlestone's wife" 61/2 weeks at 1/6d = 9/9d.

When she was herself ill in 1821 a Mrs. Wrampl1ng was paid on 7th October,

2/- for "doing" for her.

On 8th October 1821 Jas. Loftly was paid £1 for a coffin for Sarah Morter.

The bearers were paid 4/-. One shilling was provided for beer. Mrs. Pearce

was paid 5/-, perhaps for preparing the body. On 14th October 1821 Mr.

Curson was paid 4/6d for burying Sarah Morter.

- 15 -

Sarah was buried at Hethersett. The entry in the register reads:-

“142 Sarah Morter, Hethersett, October 8th 1821. Aged 56 years."

Sarah was probably the mother of a son. This entry from the register:-

"1797. Samuel, base born son of Sarah Morter baptised 12th February 1797."

30. ROSE  MORTER.

Daughter of Thomas and Margaret Morter she was baptised at Hethersett on

17th November 1766.

She was in receipt of small sums from the Overseers of the Poor in 1807,

probably when she was ill. One entry in the account book is shared with

Sarah Morter, no doubt her sister, see No. 29. On 4th April 1807, Rose was

paid 2/- for "bad eyes."

On 3rd November 1807 an entry states:-

The burial of Rose, Morter £1.11.6d

It seems likely that was mother of:-

61. John.

31. JAMES MORTER.

Son of Thomas and Margaret Morter he was baptised at, Hethersett on (27th?)

February 1768.

32. REBECKAH MORTER.

Daughter, of Thomas and Margaret Morter she was baptised at Hethersett on

25th March 1770.

33. ANN MORTER.

Daughter of Thomas and Margaret Morter she was baptised at Hethersett on

17th June 1773.

34. JOHN MORTER.

Son of, Thomas and Margaret Morter he was baptised at Hethersett on 27th

March 1774.

35. EDMUND MORTER.

Son of Thomas and Margaret Morter he was baptised at Hethersett on 25th

December 1776.

36. WILLIAM MORTER.

Son of William and Hannah (Cooper.) Morter was baptised at Hethersett on

4th August 1769.

- 16 -

37. JAMES MORTER.

Son of William and Hannah (Cooper.) Morter he was baptised at Hethersett on

5th March 1771.

38. JAMES MORTER.

Son of William and Elizabeth (Ball.) Morter he was baptised at Costessey.

The entry in the register reads:-

1791.25th September, Morter, James son of William and Elizabeth Ball."

Married at Costessey on 15th February 1818. The entry in the register

reads :-

"29. James Morter, Singleman of this Parish and Mary Barley of this Parish,

Singlewoman were married in this church by banns this 15th day of February

1818, by me Thom. Wilson, Curate.

This marriage was solemnized between us,   James 'Morter.

                                                                                     Mary Barley

In the presence of Edmund Barley,

                             Mary Morter.

It is likely that the witness Mary Morter was James’ s sister,

Children of James and Mary (Barley.) Morter :-

62. Elizabeth.

63. William.

James's wife Mary Morter was buried at Costessey on 1821 aged

31 years.

James married (2) at Costessey, Elizabeth Saddleton. The entry in the Parish

register reads:-

"79. James Morter, Widower and Elizabeth Saddleton of this Parish,

Singlewoman, were married in this church by banns this 18th day of October

1824.

This marriage was solemnized between us James Morter.

    Elizabeth Saddleton, her mark.

In the presence of Elizabeth Woods, her mark.

                             William Woods, his mark.

The witnesses signing by mark second marriage of James were his

sister and brother-in-law.

Elizabeth Saddleton was born circa 1795 at Shipdham. At the age of 35

years she embraced Catholicism and was baptised at Costessey Catholic

Church on 14th April 1830.

Both are mentioned in the 1841 Census of Costessey:-

- 17 -

Mary *  "             Wife. Marr. 59                "     Shipdham.

James   "           Son.  Unm. 21 Ag.Lab.     "  Costessey.

Joseph  "           Son.  Unm. 19 Ag.Lab.     "  Costessey.

Lucy    "              Dau.  Unm. 16 At home     " Costessey.

Obviously a mistake in calling her Mary.

Mentioned in the 1861 Census of Costessey:-

23 Costessey Street.

James Morter. Head. 66 Ag.Lab. Born Costessey.

Elizabeth "        Wife. 66           "           Shipdham.

Joseph    "         Son.  29 Ag.Lab.   "     Costessey.

James Morter was baptised into the Catholic Church at Costessey on 17th

May 1865. His age was given as 71 years. He was buried there on 22nd May

1865 aged 71 years, when his name seems to have been mistakenly entered as

Joseph.

In 1871 his widow was still living at Costessey. The Census shows:-

26.Cossey Street.

Elizabeth Morter. Head. Widow 86 Born Shipdham.

Joseph Morter.                Son. Unm,     39 Born Costessey.

Note. her age seems to be inaccurate but this was not unusual in the Census

returns

Children of James and Elizabeth (Saddleton.) Morter baptised either in the

Parish church or the Catholic Church at Costessey:-

64. Louisa.

65. James.

66. Joseph.

67. Lucy.

68. Maria.

39. MARY MORTER

Daughter of William and Elizabeth (Ball.) baptised at

Bawburgh on 21st February 1796.

Possibly this Mary was a witness at brother James and

Mary Barley. see 38. James Morter.

- 18 -

40. ELIZABETH MORTER.

Daughter of William and Elizabeth (Ball.) Morter she was baptised at

Bawburgh on 27th May 1798.

Married at Weston Longville, the entry in the register reads:-

"36. William Woods, Singleman of this Parish and Elizabeth Mortimer,

Singlewoman of this Parish were married in this church by banns this 4th

day of December 1821, by me Rector.

This marriage was solemnized between us. The mark of William Woods.

                                                                      The mark of Elizabeth Mortimer.

In the presence of Mary Moore. Wm. Savage.

Note. This is not the only instance where the name Morter has been entered

as Mortimer in the records.

William and Elizabeth were witnesses at the second marriage of her brother

James in 1824. see 38. James Morter.

Mentioned in the 1841 Census of Weston Longville when Elizabeth's mother,

Elizabeth Morter was staying with them. See 18. William Morter.

The entry reads:-

William Woods. Head 40 Ag.Lab. Born same place or County.

Elizabeth  "       Wife. 40               "

Thomas     "               15               "

Elizabeth  "                 6                "

Eliza Morter               80               "

Mentioned in the 1851 Census of Weston Longville:-

Church Street.

William Woods. Head  52.         Farmer 9 acres              Born Easton.

Elizabeth  "   Wife          50                                        Born Weston.

Elizabeth  "   Dau.          15                                        Born Weston.

Note. Unless it is a mistake, the reason why Elizabeth said she was born at

Weston has yet to be clarified.

41. JOHN MORTER,

It is not possible to say for sure that John was a son of William and

Elizabeth (Ball.) Morter. He gave his birthplace as Bawburgh in the Census

returns and named his father as William Morter at his second marriage in

1840. There is no baptismal entry for John in the register at Bawburgh, but

the only William having children baptised there about the time of John's

birth was William and his wife Elizabeth. John's true age is problematic. He

gave his age as 51 at his second wedding in 1840 as 45 in the Census of

1841, as 55 in the Census of 1851 as 63 in the Census of 1861 and as 78 in

the census of 1871. The census of 1851 suggests that John was younger than

his second wife, Elizabeth, yet he gave his age as 51 and she as 50 when

they married in 1840, though in fact Elizabeth was at least 52 years old at

the time. Perhaps John did not wish to show that he was younger than his

- 19 -

second wife and they adjusted their ages accordingly. The Census returns

are not always very accurate, some enumerators entering ages to the nearest

five. If we take an average, John was probably born between 1792 and 1798.

He named his first children William and Elizabeth and his second son James

which lends weight to the presumption that he was a son of William and

Elizabeth (Ball.) James, see 38. James Morter, baptised at Costessey, 25th

September 1791, was definitely a son of William and Elizabeth (Ball.) He too

named his 'first two children Elizabeth and William and his second son

James. He was a shepherd and this description has also been applied to

John. The evidence seems to support the fact that they were brothers but I

have found no clue to clinch it. It is of interest to note that James Morter

of Bawburgh, 1777-1854, whose wife was Elizabeth Bennett, and who was

brother of William Morter of Costessey, who married Elizabeth Ball, baptised

his first-born son Robert at Costessey in 1805. As has been noted William

and Elizabeth baptised two daughters at Bawburgh.

John Morter married at Felthorpe. The entry in the register reads:-

"1'7. John Morter, Singleman of this Parish and Mary Adcock, Singlewoman of

this Parish were married in this church by banns with consent of friends

this 12th day of October 1818, by me Edward Day, curate.

This marriage was solemnized between us, John Morter, his mark.

                                                                      Mary Adcock, her mark.

In the presence of William Fuller, his mark. Harriet Mayes.

Mary Adcock was born at Felthorpe on 8th January, baptised 12th January

and received into, the Church 9th November 1800, daughter of. John Adcock

and Elizabeth, his wife, late Elizabeth Fuller.

Mary Morter was buried at Felthorpe, from Haveringland, on 20th April 1831,

aged 30 years.

Children of John and Mary (Adcock.) Morter:-

69. William.:

70. Elizabeth.

71. James

72. Eliza.

73. Mary Ann.

The 1841 Census of Haveringland has this entry:-

Cottages.

John Morter.    Head. 45. Widower. Shepherd. Born same place or county.

James    "           Son.   16

Eliza    "              Dau.  14                                                          "

Elizabeth Pye             25 Housekeeper                               "

John Morter married (2) at Haveringland. The entry in the register reads:-

- 20 -

"6.  1842. Marriage Solemnized by Banns in the Church of Haveringland in the

 County of Norfolk.

 October 5th

John Morter, 51. Widower, Shepherd of Haveringland, son of William Morter,

 Labourer.

Elizabeth Frary, Widow, 50. daughter of James Stannard, Labourer.

This marriage was solemnized between us, John Morter. The mark of Elizabeth

Frary.

In the presence of Elizabeth Mayes. Harriet Chase.

Elizabeth Frary was born at Haveringland on 10th February and privately

baptised there on 24th February 1788, the daughter of James Stannard and

his wife Elizabeth (Nash.)

She married (1) Robert Frary of Wood Norton and had the following children

baptised at Wood Norton:-

a. Maria, baptised 14th February 1830.

b. Elizabeth, baptised 23rd September 1832.

c. Edward baptised 26th November 1834.

d. Hannah, baptised 21st August 1835.

e. Robert,' baptised 1839.

Mentioned in the 1851 Census of Haveringland:-

John Morter.    Head.   Marr. 55. Shepherd Born Bawburgh.

Elizabeth    "      Wife.     Marr. 57                   Born Haveringland.

James     "         Son.      Unm. 25. Ag.Lab.      Born Haveringland.

Elizabeth Morter was buried at Haveringland on 29th September 1857, aged

 68 years.

John was mentioned in the 1861 Census of Haveringland:-

John Morter. Head. Widower. 63. Shepherd. Born Bawburgh.

Virtue Rayner. Serv Unm.      52. Housekeeper   Born Swannington.

Helgartha Rix. Granddau.     11. Scholar.         Born Horsford.

In 1871 Census, another example of the name Mortimer being used:-

John Mortimer. Head. Widower. 78. Ag.Lab. late Shepherd. Born Bawburgh.

Virtue Rayner.  Serv   Unm.       62. Housekeeper.               " Swannington.

John Morter was buried at Haveringland on 11th May 1876 aged 80 years.

42. JAMES MORTER.

Illegitimate son of Mary Morter of Hethersett. His baptismal entry in the

register reads:-

"1791. James, base born son of Mary Morter. 3rd April

Married at Wymondham, the entry in the register reads:

- 21 -

"85. James Morter of this Parish, Bachelor and Elizabeth Chamberlin of the

same, Spinster, married in this church by banns this 7th day of December

1811.

This marriage was solemnized between us, The mark of James Morter

The mark of Elizabeth Chamberlin.

In the presence of James Sharpe and Chris. Horton."

Mentioned in the 1841 Census of Hethersett:-

James  Morter.               55         Ag.Lab.              Born same place or County.

Elizabeth ".        55                                               "

Susanna            55                                                       "

It may be that Susanna :Morter above mentioned was the widow of Charles

Morter of Hethersett who died in 1820 aged 32 years. See 58. Charles

Morter.

The 1851 Census shows that James and Elizabeth were lodging with Edward

Daines and his family at 117, Lynch Green, Hethersett:-

Edward Daines. Head. Labourer. 28 Born Norwich.

Sophia    "            Wife.                  30 Born Hethersett.

Susanna  "                                   5               "

Amie         " .                                2               "

William    "                                   4 mos.       "

James Morter .    Lodger.          64             "

Elizabeth "                "                   64         Wymondham.

Edward Daines 's wife, Sophia was a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Wells.)

Morter of Hethersett.

James Morter was buried at Hethersett on 30th March 1852, aged 66 years

which fixes his birth date as circa 1787. Therefore he must have been 3 or

4 years old when he was baptised and about 24 years old when he married.

'Elizabeth Morter his widow was mentioned in the 1871 Census of Hethersett.

Her age was recorded as 80 years, she was described as a pauper, born at

Wymondham.

43. MARIA MORTER.

1 have not found proof that Maria was a daughter of Mary Morter of

Hethersett. Maria was born at Bawburgh, or at least baptised there. James,

Mary Morter's brother had settled at Bawburgh and so it may be that Mary

went there also. That Maria was a sister of Sarah seems certain, as she was

a witness at Sarah's wedding.

'Baptised 'at Bawburgh, the entry reads:-

“Maria Morter, the daughter of Mary Morter, baptised April 1st 1798."

Another possibility is that Mary Morter, widow of Philip, (see 28. Philip

!Morter) had Maria and Sarah before she married John Bennett in 1801. Some

support is given to this theory by the fact that Maria Morter was a ;

witness at the wedding of James Bennett in 1822, James being son of John

- 22 -

and Mary (Morter.) Bennett, and thus she could have been James's sister or

half sister.

It seems likely that Maria Morter had an illegitimate daughter baptised at

Bawburgh in 1821: -

'74. Harriet.

Maria married at Bawburgh, the entry in the register reads:-

"1824. Thomas Graveling of this Parish, Singleman and Maria Morter of this

Parish Singlewoman were married in this church by banns this 6th day of

October 1824, by me Edward Postle, Curate. .

This marriage was so1emnised between us, Thomas Graveling, Maria Graveling.

In the presence of James Graveling. Ann Graveling."

The "Maria" of Maria Graveling's signature is identical with that of Maria

Morter who was a witness at the wedding of James Bennett.

Maria Graveling was buried at Bawburgh on 22nd November 1825, aged 27

years.

44. SARAH MORTER.

Baptised at Bawburgh, the entry in the register reads:-

"Sarah, daughter of Mary Morter was baptised October 27th 1799."

That she was a sister 43. Maria Morter seems certain. The. identity of her

mother is problematic. See 43. Maria Morter.

Married at Bawburgh, the entry in the register reads:-

.

25. 1821. William Pike of this Parish, Singleman and Sarah Morter of this

Parish Singlewoman were married in this church by banns this 11th day of

October 1821, by me George Taylor.

This marriage was solemnized between us, William Pike, his mark.

      Sarah Morter, her mark.

In the presence of Maria Morter.

   Philip Pank.

45.ROBERT MORTER.

Son of James and Elizabeth (Bennett.) Morter he was baptised at Costessey.

The entry in the register reads:-

"Robert, son of James and Elizabeth Morter, late Bennett, born December 12th

and baptised 22nd December 1805."

Married at St. Mary's church, Earlham on 15th October 1829 to Maria Basham.

On the 5th January 1830 a Removal Order was issued for Robert and Maria

and son (James) 10 days old. Little Melton to Earlham.

Mentioned in the 1841 Census of Colney: -

46. JAMES MORTER

I have not found proof that James was a son of James and Elizabeth

(Bennett.) Morter of Bawburgh. No baptism found at Costessey, Bawburgh, Gt.

or Lt. Melton. His age in the 1841 Census of Bawburgh was given as 25

years which means he was born about 1815. James and Elizabeth Morter did

have children baptised there about this time. In 1841 James was living

adjacent to his presumed parents at Bawburgh.

James married Harriet Gould between 18th March 1834, when Thomas Morter,

Harriet's illegitimate son was baptised and 26th August 1838 when their

daughter Elizabeth was baptised.

"50.1821. January 28th Maria daughter of James and Elizabeth Morter

It may be this Maria mentioned in the 1841 Census of Costessey: -

Possibly, in the household of William Banham. 35. Carpenter.

Maria Morter. 20. Born same place or County.

Maria may have been the mother of Matilda, illegitimate, baptised at

Bawburgh in 1846.

49. WILLIAM MORTER

Son of James and Elizabeth (Bennett.) Morter he was baptised at Little

Melton. The entry in the register reads: -

(Bennett, Spinster.) Melton Parva. Husbandman. Born 18th December 1824”.

His wife was named Maria but date and place of marriage not found. In the

50. SARAH MORTER.

Possible daughter of James and Elizabeth (Bennett.) Morter. No baptismal

entry found. Sarah gave her age as 35 and place of birth as Little Melton

in the 1851 Census of Bawburgh. She was therefore born circa 1815 and thus

could have been a daughter of James and Elizabeth who did have children

baptised there about that time.

No doubt Sarah was the mother of this illegitimate child baptised at

Bawburgh.

He married Susanna Yard but I have not found where or when

Charles was a regular recipient of Poor relief and his name occurs in the

earliest existing account book which started in 1806 until his death

in 1820.

He was usually in receipt of 3/- a week but from time to time received

extra payments. Charles was apparently a lame cripple and the accounts

constantly refer to this handicap.

In August 1818 his wife was in receipt of payments, the Overseer making

note that, "her husband was in the Castle.” but for what misdemeanor is not

stated. Again in 1819, payments were made to his wife for some weeks

because Morter was in Aylsham Bridewell.

His rent was paid for him on several occasions, several entries refer to

sums of 1/8d weekly being paid to Mrs. Spruce for this purpose. On another

occasion £2.3.4d. was paid on his behalf for half a years rent at

Wreningham.

- 31 -

8th April 1818. Advance to Chas. Morter, a cripple, to enable him to buy

41/2 yards of calico. 4/6d.

1819. 2 sheets, a blanket, and firing.

6th January 1820. A bed for Chas. Morter's children. 3/-.

The bed was probably provided during his last illness, for on 31st March

1820 an entry records; -

Paid the bearers for carrying Chas. Morter to the grave. 4/-.

22nd April 1820. Paid for coffin for Chas. Morter. £1.0.0.

After Charles's death, his widow was in receipt of regular relief and help

12th November 1820. Widow Morter, a petticoat. 3/6d.

1821. Widow Morter's shoes, "soald and heald." etc. etc.

Charles Morter was buried at Hethersett on 30th March 1820, aged 32 years.

His widow may have been the Susanna Morter, staying with James and

Elizabeth Morter of Hethersett, shown in the Census of 1841. (see 42. James

 Morter.)

She may have been the Susan Morter buried at Hethersett, from Norwich, aged

67 years, on 10th June 1850.

Children of Charles and Susanna  (Ward.) Morter: -

These entries in the Overseers Accounts are of interest: -

18th February 1821. Morter's wife in her confinement. 6d.

14th May 1821. Mrs. Robert Morter.

24th May 1821. Mr. Postle committing Morter to the Bridewell. 6/-.

2nd June 1821. Robert Morter's wife. 3/-.

From these entries it would seem that at about the time of the birth of

their first child, Robert left his wife. A warrant was issued for him and

he was put in the Bridewell. Meanwhile his wife received relief.

Robert was free by 16th June. No more mentions of him.

The entry in the register reads: -

"Born December 26th. Baptised January 24th 1830, William son of Robert

and Maria Morter. (Basham, Spinster.) Melton Parva, Labourer.

In the Removal Order issued in respect of his parents on 5th January 1830,

(Little Melton to Easton.), it was recorded that Robert and Maria had a ten

day old son named James. They must have changed their minds about his name

and called him William when they had him baptised.

Mentioned in the 1841 Census of Colney, aged 11 years.

Mentioned in the 1851 Census of Bawburgh, aged 21 years, then a Royal

Daughter of Robert and Maria Morter she was born on 22nd June and baptised

80. THOMAS MORTER (GOULD).

Son of James Morter and Harriet Gould he was barn before the marriage of

his parents. (which marriage I have not found.) The entry of baptism at

Bawburgh reads: -

"1834. March 18th, Thomas Morter son of Harriet Gould, Bawburgh, Spinster.

Mentioned in the 1851 Census of Bawburgh: -

Thomas Morter (Gould). Son. Unm.    17.         Ag.Lab.              Born Bawburgh.

Elizabeth Morter.          Dau.                     12.         Scholar.             Born Bawburgh.

George Morter.                             Son.                     6.          Scholar.             Born Bawburgh.

Thomas’s, wife was named Mary Ann. The only Mary Ann baptised at Bawburgh

whose age would fit the age of 34 years given in the 1871 census was: -

Marianne Brown whose baptism is recorded at Bawburgh: -

"1836. 17th July Marianne Brown, daughter of Sarah Farrow of Bawburgh,

Spinster."

Sarah, the mother married between 1861 and 1871, William Matthews, Widower,

but as the marriage register is still at the parish I have not checked this.

Thomas Morter Gould was not with his wife when the 1871 and 1881 Census

of Bawburgh was taken. The inference. is, that as she was described as

married in each case, and not widow, that Thomas was alive but living

elsewhere.

"

Thomas Morter Gould and Mary Ann had the following children baptised at

Bawburgh: -

a.     James Peter Morter Gould.

b.     Elizabeth Alice Gould. .

c.     Sarah Gould.

"1872. Born May 31st 1867, baptised July 7th 1872. George Henry

illegitimate son of Mary Ann Morter Gould. Bawburgh,"

Perhaps here is the reason for Thomas's absence.

The 1881 Census of Bawburgh shows: -

Mary Ann Morter Gould.            Head.   Marr.    44.        At home.            Born Bawburgh. .

Herbert Charles Matthews                      "              8.          Scholar.             Born Bawburgh.

I have not found Thomas Morter Gould's burial at Bawburgh, but the probable

August 7th and baptised on 1st September 1861.

On 1 July 1916, supported by a French attack to the south, thirteen

divisions of Commonwealth forces launched an offensive on a line

from north of Gommecourtto Maricourt Despite a preliminary

bombardment lasting seven days, the German defences were barely

touched and the attack met unexpectedly fierce resistance. Losses were

catastrophic and with only minimal advances on the southern flank, the initial

attack was a failure. In the following weeks, huge

resources of manpower and equipment were deployed in an attempt to exploit

the modest successes of the first day. However, the

German Army resisted tenaciously and repeated attacks and counter attacks

meant a major battle for every village. copse and farmhouse gained. At the end

of September, Thiepval was finally captured. The village had been an original

objective of 1 July. Attacks north and east continued throughout October and into November in

increasingly difficult weather conditions. The Battle of the Somme finally ended on

18 November with the onset of winter. In the spring of 1917. The German forces

fell back to their newly prepared defences, the Hindenburg line, and there were no

further significant engagements in the Somme sector until the Germans mounted t

heir major offensive in March 1918 The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing

of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United

Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918

and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and

November 1916. The memorial also serves as an Anglo-French Battle Memorial in

recognition of the joint nature of the 1916 offensive and a small cemetery containing equal

numbers of Commonwealth and French graves lies at the foot of the memorial. The memorial,

designed by Sir Edwin Lulyens, was built between 1928 and 1932 and unveiled by the Prince

of Wales, in the presence of the President of France. on 31 July 1932. The dead of other

Commonwealth countries who died on the Somme and have no known graves are

commemorated on national memorials elsewhere.
